Nielson and Sibelius
Composers have often used the human voice as part of their orchestral palette, and this week we can hear how Denmark's Carl Nielsen incorporated the beauties of soprano and baritone in his powerful Third Symphony, subtitled
Sinfonia espansiva. Music Director Osmo Vänskä has won acclaim for his Nielsen performances, and this concludes his inaugural-year presentation of Nielsen's early masterworks. Vänskä is particularly at home in the music of his Finnish countryman, Jean Sibelius, and the concert closes with four short Sibelius orchestral favorites, including his signature,
Finlandia.
