Finland-Meets-America
There may be a blue and white Finnish flag flying over Orchestra Hall this week, in the first "Finland-meets-America" musical exchange in the tenure of music director Osmo Vänskä. He’s invited his countryman, Jaakko Kuusisto, to come to Minneapolis to solo. Mr. Kuusisto is the award-winning concertmaster of Osmo's former orchestra, the Lahti Symphony, and he’ll perform the powerful Violin Concerto of Finland's leading contemporary composer, Einojuhani Rautavaara. And then, the Minnesota Orchestra's concertmaster, Jorja Fleezanis, takes the stage to play the melting solos in Scheherazade, Rimsky’s Korksakov’s musical fable of a thousand and one nights.
